Memory & Dementia

Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. It typically begins with difficulty forming and retaining new memories and progresses gradually over years.

Common features

  • Difficulty remembering recent events or conversations
  • Repeating questions
  • Word-finding difficulty
  • Getting lost in familiar places
  • Difficulty managing finances or medications
  • Changes in judgment or planning

How it is evaluated

  • Detailed history including input from family
  • Neurological examination
  • Cognitive and memory testing
  • Laboratory studies to exclude other contributors
  • MRI or CT of the brain when appropriate
  • Alzheimer's biomarker testing when clinically indicated

Treatment

Treatment is individualized. It may include medications directed at symptoms, management of conditions that worsen cognition, attention to safety and driving, caregiver education, and planning for the future. Specific medication decisions are made in the office after an evaluation and are not made through this website.
