When Memory Changes Deserve Evaluation
Memory changes do not have one cause. A neurological evaluation looks at the pattern and pace of change, how it affects daily life, and whether medications, sleep, mood, medical illness, or a neurological condition may be contributing. Concerns may include mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, normal pressure hydrocephalus, or another cause of changes in thinking or behavior.
- Repeating questions, forgetting recent conversations, or missing appointments
- Difficulty managing medications, finances, driving, or familiar tasks
- Progressive word-finding, reasoning, judgment, or personality changes
- Walking changes, hallucinations, fluctuations, or other neurological symptoms
- A family member noticing changes that the patient may not recognize
What a Neurological Memory Evaluation May Involve
Evaluation begins with a detailed history from the patient and, when possible, someone who knows the patient well. It may include a neurological examination and structured cognitive assessment, review of medications and medical history, laboratory testing for treatable contributors, and brain imaging. Additional testing may be appropriate when the history, examination, or initial results raise a specific question.
Telehealth may support parts of this process once Florida service begins, especially history, record review, family discussion, and follow-up. Some patients will still need local or in-person examination, cognitive testing, imaging, or other diagnostic work.
