Memory & Dementia
Memory Testing
Memory testing provides an objective measure of cognition. It helps characterize which thinking abilities are affected, establishes a baseline, and makes change over time easier to identify.
Abilities that may be tested
- Learning and recall of new information
- Attention and processing speed
- Language and naming
- Visual and spatial abilities
- Executive function, planning, and organization
How results are used
Testing is interpreted together with the history, examination, laboratory results, and imaging. The pattern of results — not any single score — is what helps identify a likely cause.
Types of testing
- Brief office-based cognitive screening
- More detailed cognitive testing in the office
- Formal neuropsychological testing when indicated
