What does an EMG test show?
Short answer
EMG and nerve conduction studies measure how well nerves conduct signals and how muscles respond. Together they help determine whether a nerve is compressed or injured, where the problem is located, how severe it is, and whether it appears recent or long-standing.
Understanding this
Nerve conduction studies apply small electrical pulses to the skin and record how quickly and strongly the nerve responds. EMG uses a fine needle electrode to record electrical activity within a muscle.
The two studies are complementary. They can help distinguish carpal tunnel syndrome from a cervical radiculopathy, identify a generalized peripheral neuropathy, and clarify whether weakness comes from nerve or muscle.
Symptoms and signs
- Numbness or tingling in the hands, feet, arms, or legs
- Weakness or muscle wasting
- Pain radiating into an arm or leg
- Symptoms following a nerve injury
How it is evaluated
- Nerve conduction studies of the affected limb
- Needle EMG of selected muscles when indicated
- Interpretation together with history, examination, and imaging
When to seek care
- Rapidly progressive weakness, difficulty breathing, or difficulty swallowing requires emergency care.
- New or worsening weakness should be evaluated promptly.
